How Often Should You Clean Your Carpet? A Charlotte Homeowner's Guide
May 15, 20266 min read
The generic answer is every twelve months. The useful answer depends on pets, children, and how much red Piedmont clay is walked through your front door.

Intervals that actually reflect the household
Use the shortest interval that applies to you:
- Adults only, no pets, shoes off: every 18 months
- Typical family home: every 12 months
- Pets, or children under five: every 6 to 9 months
- Multiple pets, allergies, or a home-based business: every 6 months
- Rental turnover: at every move-out, regardless of the calendar
Why Charlotte is harder on carpet than most markets
Piedmont clay is fine, iron-rich and it stains. It travels in on shoes and paws, works to the base of the pile and stays there. Combine it with summer humidity that slows drying and encourages odour, and carpet here genuinely needs a shorter interval than the same carpet in a dry climate.
What vacuuming does and does not do
Vacuuming twice a week is the highest-value thing you can do for your carpet, because it removes the abrasive grit before it cuts the fibre. But it only reaches the top third of the pile. Oils, dander, pollen and dust bound to the fibre need heat, chemistry and extraction.
Think of vacuuming as protecting the fibre and steam cleaning as restoring it. Neither replaces the other.
Waiting until it looks dirty is waiting too long
By the time a carpet looks soiled, the abrasion has already happened. Cleaning on schedule is the difference between carpet that lasts fifteen years and carpet replaced at eight. That maths is why a $79 clean is maintenance, not a luxury.
